Oracle Primavera P6 15.1 Set to Debut

For those of you who have become accustomed to the Primavera P6 naming convention for new releases hold onto your hats because your world is about to change. Since P6 started with release 5 then progressed through 6,7 and now 8.x, Oracle has decided to title releases based on year released and number of releases for that year. The same naming convention will also apply to Unifier and P6 Analytics.  The rationale is to name products that are in the same family and are designed to be integrated with one another to have the same version numbers to make it easier to match the compatible versions.  So when it is released this month (presumably) the new release of P6 will be 15.1. Although this is a point release and not a major rewrite, it will come as a shock to many. The new release, which had the old naming convention been in place and would have been titled 8.5, will have some significant upgrades.  Those enhancements at a high-level include:

  • Continued support for Microsoft SQL Server
  • A new modularized 64-bit version of Visualizer which will greatly enhance performance when used on large projects
  • Most administrative capabilities returned to the client
  • Enhancements to improve compliancy with the UN/CEFACT standard for public sector users
  • Beginning the process of removing Java Applets from P6 (Oracle states it will take several releases before they are all replaced)
  • Tighter integration with Oracle Primavera Unifier (also being renamed 15.1) via Gateway
  • Gateway included as a “limited use license” allowing it be used at no cost when integrating with other Oracle Primavera products
  • TeamMember enhancements
For our Contract Management clients PCM will remain with the 14.x terminology with the next version slated for release sometime in calendar year 2015, which will be named 14.2. Once we have had a chance to get our hands on the new release we will present all of the new capabilities in a What’s New in Primavera P6 webinar.  We will also provide more information in our April newsletter.  If you would like to receive our newsletter or be invited to our webinar please provide your email address via the comments feature or email us at
